Gene ID 3360
Full Name 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 4
Alias 5-HT4, 5-HT4R
Introduction The 5HT4 receptor (5-HT4R) is a member of the serotonin receptors. In response to serotonin (5HT) these G protein coupled receptors cause an increase in cAMP production. It is a glycosylated, transmembrane protein found in the central and peripheral nervous system. Multiple transcripts with variant C-terminal sequnces have been described. The significance of SNP variants of 5HT4 receptors in mental diseases is a controversial topic, while other SNP variants have been associated with asthma. Additional research show that the early presence of these receptors in the dorsomedial nuclei of prenatal hypothalamus may indicate a crucial role in fetal development.
