Dendrimer-Fluorophore Conjugation Service

Dendrimer modification by fluorophores not only improves transfection efficiency, but also allows for a wide range of biomedical applications. CD BioSciences provides high-quality, customized services to researchers worldwide, developing effective strategies to solve all problems encountered in the modification of dendrimers.

Introduction into Fluorophores

A fluorophore, also known as a fluorescent dye, is similar to a chromophore and acts as a fluorescent compound that can re-emit when excited by light, usually containing several combined aromatic groups, or planar or cyclic molecules with multiple π bonds. Fluorophores are fluorescent dyes that can be used as fluorescent markers for protein, tissue, and cellular labeling for detection by fluorescence microscopy. Fluorophores have a variety of applications and can be used as tracers in liquids, as dyes for staining certain structures, as substrates for enzymes or as probes.

A dendrimer is a hyperbranched macromolecule that acts as a polymer and is formed by the conjugation of monomers. Dendrimers are synthesized stepwise, allowing perfect control over the three-dimensional structure, shape, size, number, and type of terminal functional groups of the molecule. Most dendrimers are organic, consisting of C, H, N, O, and usually have a nitrogen atom at the branching point. However, other types of dendrimers exist, particularly phosphorus and silicon-phosphorus-containing dendrimers, which are important for nanomaterials and nanomedicines, mainly because their terminal functional groups can be easily modified starting from the "native" terminal functions which are either aldehydes or P(S)Cl2 groups. The fluorescent groups can be located as terminal groups on the surface, or at the core, or linked to the core (off-center) or to the branches of the dendritic structure. Dendrimers modified by fluorophores are mainly used in gene transfection, not only to display the vector during transfection, but also to improve transfection efficiency.
