small ubiquitin-like modifier 2
NCBI Summary
Encodes a small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) polypeptide that becomes covalently attached to various intracellular protein targets, much like ubiquitination, leading to post-translational modification of those targets. SUMO2 can form SUMO chains through lysine residue 10 during in vitro assays.

UniProt Comments
Ubiquitin-like protein which can be covalently attached to target lysines as a monomer. Does not seem to be involved in protein degradation and may function as an antagonist of ubiquitin in the degradation process. Required for the massive protein sumoylation in the nucleus induced by heat shock and controlled by SIZ1.
