NCBI Protein Information
protein arginine methyltransferase 4B
NCBI Summary
Encodes an type I protein arginine methyltransferase. PRMT4b can catalyze the asymmetric dimethylation of arginines 2,17, and 26 on histone 3 and can also methylate myelin basic protein in vitro. Double mutants lacking PRMT4a and 4b have reduced levels of histone 3 methylated at R17. These double mutants flower late due to defects in the autonomous pathway and they have elevated levels of FLC transcripts.

UniProt Comments
Methylates (mono- and asymmetric dimethylation) the guanidino nitrogens of arginyl residues in several proteins involved in DNA packaging, transcription regulation, and mRNA stability . Recruited to promoters upon gene activation, methylates histone H3 and activates transcription via chromatin remodeling (PubMed:27676073). Positive regulator in the oxidative stress tolerance that promotes the expression of enzymes preventing oxidative stress such as APX1 and GPX1 by histone methylation (H3R17me2a). Confers tolerance to cadmium CdCl2 and salt NaCl stresses (PubMed:27676073).
