NCBI Summary
Encodes a phosphatidylinositol 4-OH kinase, PI-4Kbeta1. Arabidopsis contains 12 PI-4Ks in three separate families: PI-4Kalphs, PI-4kbeta, and PI-4Kgamma. PI-4Kbeta1 is 83% identical to PI-4kbeta2 encoded by At5g09350. Interacts with the RabA4b GTPase. Important for polarized root hair growth as the loss of this gene and its close relative PI-4kbeta2, leads to the formation of abnormal root hairs.

UniProt Comments
Acts on phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns) in the first committed step in the production of the second messenger inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate. Necessary for proper organization of the trans-Golgi network (TGN) and post-Golgi secretion in root hairs. Together with PI4KB2, required during polarized root hair expansion and pollen tube elongation. Functions redundantly with PI4KB2 upstream of the cold response phosphoinositide-dependent phospholipase C (PI-PLC) pathway.
