Encodes a protein with lycopene beta-cyclase activity. This enzyme uses the linear, symmetrical lycopene as substrate. However, unlike the ε-cyclase which adds only one ring, the beta-cyclase introduces a ring at both ends of lycopene to form the bicyclic beta-carotene.
