This lectin is a dimeric glycoprotein consisting of two subunits of nearly equal size, each with a disulfide linked chain and a binding site for an alpha - or β-linked N-acetylglucosamine residue. Unlike other N-acetylglucosamine specific lectins, increasing the number of N-acetylglucosamine residues beyond two does not improve affinity. GSL II has been reported to have a unique ability to recognize α-or β-linked N-acetylglucosamine residues on the non-reducing ends of oligosaccharides.
