Drug Discovery & Development

Drug Discovery & Development

New medicines are constantly required to address unmet medical needs. As more work has been done to understand the progression of diseases, and characterize the relevant signaling pathways, it allows more possibility to find cures for diseases once incurable.

A variety of approaches are employed to identify potential drugs, among which compound screening is widely used. Of tens of thousands of compounds screened, a few hundred will enter preclinical testing and only a small number will enter clinical testing. Thus, the discovery and development of drugs are expensive, time-consuming, yet worth trying.

To make it easier and faster, CD BioScicences has engaged the most advanced technologies and experienced scientists and doctors to set up a drug discovery and development platform, which provides solutions covering every step of a drug's discovery and development before it enters clinical trials. Related information can also be found in our Drug-based Services.

Solutions for Drug Discovery

Disease Decision-making

The first step of a drug discovery and development project is to decide the diseases one wants to cure. New drugs are needed either for diseases with no treatment exists or to offer advantages over the existing treatment.

Here we provide you with information about your diseases of interest, in terms of market analysis, opinions of experts, feedback from medical practitioners and scientific conferences, so you can make an informed choice.

Project Development

The mechanisms of diseases are studied largely by basic scientists and physicians, whose work facilitates the identification of potential targets for drug discovery. The targets can be receptors, enzymes, transporters or biological processes involved in disease development. Please see our Target Identification service for more information.

The drug candidates are biologically active compounds such as small chemical compounds or large molecular weight antibodies, which interact with targets and elicit measurable clinical effects.

Here, we gather information and help you to decide the strategy (target-based screening or phenotype-based screening) and the compound library for the drug discovery project. Then, we make project-specific solutions, discuss the details with you and address all your concerns.

Hit Identification

There are multiple approaches to identify potential drugs, i.e., compound screening, existing therapeutics testing, new technologies adaptation, computer-based drug design, etc.

For compound screening, more information can be found in our Drug Screening service. We provide all types of screenings with various libraries.

We also support the test of existing treatments, adaptation of new technologies (e.g., CRISPR-based genome editing), as well as drug design using structure-activity relationship (SAR) approach.

Solutions for Drug Development

ADME Study

Once the drug candidates are found, they are evaluated on drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK) to determine their bioavailability, efficacy and safety.

The ADME study we offer studies absorption/administration, distribution, metabolism, elimination/excretion, toxicity (ADMET) properties of drug candidates, which also contributes to lead optimization, and compound design. Please see our Drug Evaluation service for more information.

Lead Optimization

In the lead optimization process, the drug candidates are synthesized and modified to improve potency and reduce toxicity incorporating information gathered in the ADME study. In a drug development process, there can be an unlimited number of lead optimizations following either ADME study or preclinical study.

Here, we perform a variety of in vitro physicochemical profiling and in vivo bioassays, ex vivo assays and in silico assays to evaluate the potential of drug candidates. Please see our Drug Optimization service for more information.

MOA Study

Mechanism of action (MOA) refers to the specific biochemical interaction through which drugs produce an effect.

In the MOA study, we identify the molecular targets (e.g., receptors, enzymes) of drugs or drug candidates, and uncover signaling pathways involved, as well as cellular processes affected.

Preclinical Study

A preclinical study determines the new drug's efficacy, toxicity, and pharmacokinetic on non-human subjects.

Here, we conduct studies in a wide array of species and disease models with multiple routes of administration to determine the dosage for maximal efficacy, and minimal side effects. Please see our Preclinical Study service for more information.
